Thursday 7th January 2016 Building the right support - Homes not hospitals Louisa Whait Self Advocate Feedback How can we develop a group of experts by experience? How can we support people who want to help do Care and Treatment reviews? Easy read questionnaire Good training and practise Can we not use the people who have been ‘quality checkers’ as they have had practise to ask questions and already have an idea of what quality is? What do we need to do, to make sure people do not need to go to hospital when they have poor mental health? Have good easy read information about what helps to make you feel happy, like eating well, doing exercise and taking your tablets. Have the right type of support. Do the doctors listen well? Are they trained to help people with a learning disability who also has poor mental health? We need to make sure there is training and information for doctors about this. We need to make sure that there is good easy to read information for people with learning disabilities when they are feeling or showing that they are sad, miserable, depressed. Need to make sure that people with learning disabilities know who they may be able to talk to when they are felling sad or depressed. Friend, parent or carer, support worker and family members. How can we make sure everyone can help us make plans for Transforming Care and the 9 Principles? Lots of good, clear information

How can we develop a group of experts by experience? Talk to people as they leave hospital. Share information with carers and support staff. Make an information pack to include information about support in the community, groups to go to. Support for carers – data base. Talk to providers. Talk to family carers including sisters and brothers. How can we support people who want to help do Care and Treatment reviews? Person needs to be talked through the whole experience. What do we need to do, to make sure people do not need to go to hospital when they have poor mental health? Professionals need to work together – take responsibility. Get communication right Listen to carers and family members opinion Professionals need to respond quicker How can we make sure everyone can help us make plans for Transforming Care and the 9 Principles? Support carers more Support workers – make sure they have the right training Follow up on advice and signposting ( telling them where to get the right advice, information and services) Get the right support in the community
