4 Definitions Syllabus – “an outline of a course of study” Orientation – “a guided introduction”

5 Review and Discussion Rationale – “…reasonable basis for action”
The rationale in the old syllabus read…the rationale in the new syllabus has some unique and new influences – UNESCO’s Pillars of Learning…

7 Review and Discussion The second key influence on the new rationale was a document, “The Ideal Caribbean Person”; a document adopted by CARICOM at its 18th summit.

The study of Physics is intended to assist students to: acquire technical and scientific vocabulary develop the ability to apply an understanding of the principles and concepts involved in Physics to situations which may not be familiar

9 Review and Discussion appreciate the contributions of some of the outstanding regional and international scientists to the development of Physics develop the ability to use critical thinking to solve problems design and perform experiments to test theories and hypotheses

10 Review & Discussion collect and represent data in an acceptable form
report accurately and concisely Develop the ability to appraise information critically, identify patterns and evaluate ideas appreciate the significance and limitations of science in relation to social and economic development

emphasis on order of content flexibility in teaching approaches explanations of the various headings in the syllabus

New Syllabus – 5 sections Remaining sections retain their old names Specific Objectives – most in the old syllabus were ‘recall’ – the knowledge [lowest] level of learning objectives

14 Review and Discussion Content/Notes – simple explanations of content to be taught Skills – SBA related – help in paring activity and skill Inter-relationships – Physics does not stand alone Suggested teaching & learning activities – ideas for practical activities

17 SBA Component Procedures for Conducting SBAs has been moved up
has been simplified has new content – how to perform assessments & record marks

18 SBA Component Assessment of Practical Skills Still SIXTEEN SBAs
Skills to be assessed are… MM, ORR, AI, P&D at least [not ONLY!!!!] three [3] assessments per skill SBA Moderation – on-site visits

Aimed at fixing the problems teachers, students and markers face with Planning & Designing SBAs – scenarios should come from real-life/ every-day experiences Proposal [method stated!] Experiment Corrections and conclusion
