1 I Peter Lesson 8

2 Review Purpose: Stand firm in the true grace of God
Recipients were suffering Suffering is part of that true grace – salvation Remember who you are: I Peter 2:9

3 Submission I Pet. 2:13 Submit, for the Lord’s sake, to every human institution Who? ALL believers Submit: “hupotasso” – to place under, to subject, to obey, to place in an orderly fashion It is the responsibility of the believer to arrange himself under authorities It’s one way of “doing good” and keeping one’s behavior “excellent among the Gentiles” It’s a way to silence any accusation from fools It’s God’s will I Pet. 2:15

4 Cross References Be subject to governing authorities Rom. 13
God is the one who establishes authorities Rom. 13 Be subject to rulers Titus 3 Rom. 13:1 There is no authority except from God, and those which exist are established by God Rom. 13:2 Therefore, whoever resists authority has opposed the ordinance of God; and they who have opposed will receive condemnation upon themselves.

5 Servants I Pet. 2:18 Servants are commanded to submit with all respect
Submit whether the master is good or bad Is this an example of unjust suffering? “This finds favor with God” I Pet. 2:19 Cross References: Titus 2:9 Be well-pleasing, not argumentative Eph. 6 & Col. 3 Obey with fear and trembling Not with just external service but with a sincere heart; as to Christ, fearing the Lord

6 Our Example Example: hupogrammos – a writing to be copied, an example, a pattern, example for imitation “ to teach to write, since the writing copy of the teacher was to be followed by the scholars”. I Pet. 2:21-25 Jesus’ example of submission Innocent: committed no sin No deceit was in His mouth Did not revile, when He was reviled Uttered no threats Kept entrusting Himself to God who judges righteously, He bore our sins in His body I Pet. 1:17 The Father impartially judges

7 Jesus our Example Phil. 2:5-11 Jesus existed in the form of God
Emptied Himself Took the form of a bond-servant, of a man He humbled Himself by obeying the Father He obeyed, even to death

8 I Peter 3 Submission: Wives How? As Christ submitted “In the same way”
Wives are to submit to their OWN husbands, even if they are disobedient to the Word Result: Husband may be won without a word Wives submit with respect, proper behavior, because they have first submitted to the Lord Submit in DOING WHAT IS RIGHT (3:6) Sin is NOT doing what is right; we are not called to submit to that Col. 3:18 “as is fitting in the Lord” Tit. 2:5 “so that the Word of God will not be dishonored”

9 Wives Attitude: From the heart with a gentle and quiet spirit I Pet. 3:4 This is precious in the sight of God……so is Jesus, the rejected stone I Pet. 2:4 Eph. 5 Be subject as the church is to Christ

10 I Peter 3 Vs. 7 Husbands live with your wives in an understanding and honoring way SO THAT your prayers will not be hindered Vs ALL are to live harmoniously/in unity/with sympathy and love/tender and humble toward one another Bless instead of returning evil for evil You were CALLED for this very purpose! YOU receive/inherit a blessing God is against those who do evil, but His eyes are toward the righteous and His ears attend to their prayers

11 I Peter 3 Vs. 18-22 Christ suffered for doing what is right
He proclaimed to spirits (a human soul that has left the body) now in prison who were disobedient in Noah’s days Now salvation is connected with a good conscience through Christ’s resurrection After His resurrection He went to heaven and is now at God’s right hand

12 Chart Submission to Christ: I Pet. 3 Angels, authorities and powers
Eph. 1:18-2:6 ALL things are under Christ’s feet I Cor. 15 ALL things will be put in subjection under Jesus’ feet. Then He will submit Himself to the Father Eph. 5:25 The church is subject to Christ Phil. 2 ALL will confess Him as Lord and bow Submission to God: James 4:7 Submit to God Heb. 12:9 Be subject to the Father I Cor. 15 The Son Himself will be subjected to the Father

13 Chart Submission to the Word:
2 Thess. 1:8 Christ will deal with those disobedient to the Word, gospel of Christ 2 Thess. 3:14 Don’t associate (intimately) with those who do not obey the Word Submission of Believer to Believer: I Pet. 5:5 Younger men be subject to your elders, all of you clothe yourselves in humility toward one another I Cor. 16 Submit to everyone who helps in the work of the ministry Eph. 5 Be subject to one another in the fear of Christ

14 Chart Submission of children to parents:
Eph. 6:1 and Col. 3:20 Children obey your parents in the Lord for this is right and well pleasing to the Lord Submission of those subject to Christians: Luke 10 Demons were subject to the 70 who went out in Jesus’ name

15 Application Are YOU suffering unjustly?
Are YOU being an example in that suffering, like Jesus was for us? Are YOU submitting in every area like we have been commanded to do in Scripture? How’s your attitude? Is it like that of Christ?
