Some of the older human civilizations began in the Nile River valley. Farmers in that area were among the first to domesticate plants and animals.

2 Egyptians built a sophisticated irrigation system to water crops during droughts.
They also developed a calendar with a 365 day year and a system of writing known as hieroglyphics.

3 Invasions by Arab armies brought the Muslim religion to N. Africa.
Algeria was invaded by France.

4 Italy colonized Libya. Disagreements led to European powers drawing geometric boundaries in N. Africa.

5 Egypt gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1922.
Algeria won independence from France in 1962.

6 Libya won independence from Italy in 1951.
Tunisia separated from France in 1956.
