By the end of today’s lesson… ALL OF US will be able to describe in detail what the Feudal System was. (4C-4B) EVEN BETTER IF you can explain how King William used the Feudal System to keep control. CAN YOU COMPARE THE FEUDAL SYSTEM TO THE DOMESDAY BOOK AND JUDGE WHICH WAS MOST IMPORTANT AND WHY? (6B-7C)

4 Starter You are King William. You have just defeated your enemies and have been proclaimed King of England (Congrats). There is still trouble in the country. How are you going to protect your throne? In pairs, come up with as many ways as possible to protect what is rightfully yours! Anachronisms not allowed!

5 So, how did he keep control?

6 The Feudal System Most powerful
The King gave land to the Barons and Bishops. The Barons and Bishops (about 300) promised loyalty to the King. The Barons would give Knights for the army for 40 days a year. The Barons would control and tax local people. The Barons gave land to their Knights and promised them protection and justice. With your partner, cut out and arrange the cards into their place in the Feudal System. The Knights (about 4000) promised loyalty to their Baron. They gave land to peasants and promised them protection and justice. The Peasants (about 1.5m) obeyed their Lord. Worked on his land for him. Paid their taxes. Least powerful

7 Describe the feudal system in no less than three sentences.
Explain how the Feudal system helped William control England. (try to explain at least two reasons) Either Then ‘The Feudal System meant everyone had a master.’ How much do you agree with this? I strongly agree/disagree with this opinion because… Which was more useful to William, the Feudal system or the Domesday book?
