1 Answer the questions in your science notebook Yes, write the question too
1. All matter has both physical and chemical properties. A physical property is one that does not change the chemical nature of matter. Which of these choices is a physical property? A. solubility B. flammability C. ability to rust D. reaction with water 2. Matter has two basic properties: physical properties and chemical properties. Which of these statements best describes physical properties? A. Physical properties behave identically for all matter under the same conditions. B. Physical properties can be observed without changing the identity of a substance. C. Physical properties are observed by seeing how a substance reacts with other substances. D. Physical properties cause atoms and molecules to change structure when substances are mixed.

2 Benchmark C – voice level 0
H – raise hand and wait for teacher to respond A – guided notes M – remain in seat unless given permission P – independent Benchmark SC.8.P.8.4 Classify and compare substances on the basis of characteristic physical properties that can be demonstrated or measured; for example, density, thermal or electrical conductivity, solubility, magnetic properties, melting and boiling points, and know that these properties are independent of the amount of the sample.

3 What are physical properties of matter?
A characteristic of a substance that can be observed without changing the identity of the substance is called a physical property. All of the senses can be used to observe physical properties.

4 What are physical properties of matter?
1. Mass and volume are physical properties. 2. The state of matter is a physical property. The state of matter is the physical form of the matter. Most matter exists as a solid, liquid, or gas. Copyright © Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Publishing Company

5 What are physical properties of matter?
3. Electrical conductivity is a measure of how well electric currents moves through a substance. 4. Thermal conductivity is the rate at which a substance transfers heat.

6 What are physical properties of matter?
5. Solubility is the ability of a substance to dissolve in another substance. 6. Malleability is the ability of a substance to be rolled or pounded into various shapes. 7. Magnetic attraction is also a physical property that can be observed.

7 What are physical properties of matter?
8. The shine, or luster, of a metal can be easily observed. 9. The melting point of a substance is the temperature at which it changes from a solid to a liquid. 10. Boiling point is the point at which a substance boils.

9 Turn and Talk C – voice level 0
H – raise hand and wait for teacher to respond A – annotating the text M – remain in seat unless given permission P – independent Turn and Talk You will have 10 minutes to read and annotate the article. Use the symbols below to assist you in analyzing the text. ? – something you don’t understand and have a question about ! – something interesting or new to your knowledge * - something you can make a connection to the real world  - something you disagree with

10 Turn and Talk You will now have 2 minutes to discuss the article below using the statement starters below to guide you

11 What are chemical properties of matter?
A chemical property describes the ability of a substance to change into a new substance with different properties. 1. The ability to rust is a chemical property because, in each case, a metal changes to a different substance.

12 What are chemical properties of matter?
Chemical properties can be identified by the changes they produce. 2. Flammability is the ability of a substance to burn. 3. Reactivity is the ability of a substance to interact with another substance and form one or more new substances.

13 Solubility IN= not Insoluble
The ability of a substance to be dissolved into another substance.

14 Solubility Vocabulary:
Solute: The substance that is dissolved into the solvent. Solvent: The substance into which the solute is dissolved. Solution: When the solute is dissolved into the solvent. (Homogeneous mixture).

15 Saturation Point Saturation Point: When the solution can’t dissolve any more solute. EX.) the Kool-Aid can’t dissolve more sugar, so it settles on the bottom.

16 Transition Time… 1. Penda Learning 2. Solubility LAB 3. Achieve 3000
C – voice level 1 H – raise hand and wait for teacher to respond A – Penda and Lab M – remain in seat or with group unless given permission P – independent or group Transition Time… 1. Penda Learning -Complete the Penda activity “Physical Properties of Matter” 2. Solubility LAB 3. Achieve 3000 “All About Dirt”
