2. What are Essential Standards?
The Kindergarten team has combed through the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) to determine the absolute standards that ALL kindergartners need to master by the end of the year. These standards will lay a solid foundation for next year and the standards of first grade.
Will we be teaching other things too? YES, we teach all of the TEKS.

3. Reading Essential Standards
Letter identification and sounds (TEK K.3.A) 1st semester
Decode regular words in text and independent of content (TEK K.3.B) 2nd semester
vc, cvc, ccvc and cvcc words
Retells a main event from a story read aloud (TEK K.8.A) 1st and 2nd semester
The wolf tried to blow the pigs houses down.
Describe characters in a story and the reasons for their actions (TEK K.8.B)1st and 2nd semester
Jean was mean on the playground because no one ever asked her to play. At the end of the story she was nice because the other kids played with her.

4. Math Essential Standards
Recite numbers up to at least 100 (TEK K.5)
1st semester to 50
2nd semester to 100 by ones and tens
Generate a number that is one more than or one less than another number to at least 20 (TEK K.2.F)
What is 1 more than 9? What is 1 less than 15?
Read, write and represent whole numbers from 0 to at least 20 with and without objects or pictures. (TEK K.2.B)
1st semester to 10
2nd semester to 20

5. Writing Essential Standards
Use letter-sound correspondences to spell words correctly (TEK K.18.B)
1st semester beginning sounds of words
2nd semester beginning and ending sounds of words and CVC words
Use completer sentences when speaking and writing (TEK K.16.C)
1st semester 1 complete sentence with correct punctuation
2nd semester 3 complete sentences with correct punctuation
Write legibly- form upper and lower case letters using the basic conventions of print- left to right and top to bottom progression (TEK K.17.A)
