2 Messenger’s message Polybus is dead What is significant about this???

3 Jocasta Irony of her praying to the gods….just a few lines later she is like, “who needs the gods” She prayed for their help but then turns around and blasphemes them… Line

4 Fate Vs. Freewill Oedipus worries that he will still fulfill the second half of that prophecy Jocasta reassures him by saying Line

5 Irony – GOOD NEWS!!! The messenger says he came here to bring good news and now he will deliver more…. Oedipus is worried about the prophecy So the messenger tells him that Polybus is not his father…..

6 Jocasta knows Jocasta tells Oedipus to stop searching because it will cost him his life Oedipus of course will not be denied – His pride - Hubris Line

7 Jocasta Line 1226-128 She is disgusted and doesn’t want him to know…
Motherly protection After this she goes and kills herself

8 Chorus Foreshadows the death of Jocasta Line 1229-31
Something bad is going to happen because Jocasta isn’t sharing

9 Herdsman - shepherd The scene with the herdsman CLIMAX
This is where we see Oedipus learn and change It is also during this scene that we see the fall of the tragic Hero.

10 Fate vs. Freewill The Herdsman makes an important statement about Oedipus’ fate “line Points out that this was oedipus’ fate since birth and there was nothing he could do to stop it…. We are going to take another look at this idea at the end

11 Line The turning point for Oedipus – this is the line number for the climax of the story This is where he realizes the truth and is repentant of his actions

12 Lots of pity and fate and stuff
Line : Here we see one of the elements of tragedy fulfilled – People begin to feel sorry for Oedipus and therefore the Audience does too We also see them Acknowledge Oedipus’ fate

13 More Fate Line 1389-1390 Line1391– Another element of Tragedy
Reversal of fortune Line The chorus wishes that he had never come to thebes Not because they hate him, but because he would never have fulfilled the prophecy and he wouldn’t be going through the misery he is going through

14 Oedipus stabbing his eyes out
Line His physical blindness is symbolic of his blindness to the truth He inflicted the physical pain to help deal with his emotional pain He can no longer look upon the things that made him happy without reliving all of the anguish, so he stabs out his eyes so he is not constantly reminded of this

15 Ending Line 1728-29 - What does this mean It is bigger than Oedipus
This is a universal lesson for all to learn DEPRESSING???

16 Oedipus’ Denial of the truth Is because of his pride
Oedipus’ Denial of the truth Is because of his pride. This is why he falls.
