5 Chapelcross Duct Metal Recycling Project
Key stats 840te metal to be removed (top ducts, filter pots, elbows) 30+ consignments to Cyclife MRF at Lillyhall and Cyclife Sweden site (for material that can’t be treated in UK) Consignments started in March 18 and will continue through to June 18 Project includes onsite work to characterise and prepare for transport, transport by road and sea, treatment in UK and Sweden.

Effluent treatment plant for Harwell site (60+ years of operations) Several years of planning, characterisation, and site preparations – key site remediation project to allow de-licencing and sale of land for new development Overall project will generate 12,000m3 of VLLW over next 2 years 500 shipments to Augean landfill in Northamptonshire First consignment in March 2018

9 Sellafield WAGR Boxes Waste items encapsulated in concrete box from decommissioning of Windscale Advanced Gas Cooled Reactor Mix of LLW and ILW items of reactor shield plates and graphite. Encapsulated into 106 Boxes. Boxes are 2.4m x 2.2m x 2.2m Different populations Category 1 is 15 x boxes which we have assessed and happy comply with LLWR WAC. Category 2 is LLW but need further review against WAC – 45 LLW boxes Category 3 is further 27 that are ILW but will decay in next 10 yrs. Concrete box is very robust package – but different to normal LLW container Removing boxes frees up space in shielded store to accelerate high hazard decommissioning (pond skips) LLWR has done disposability assessment on Cat 1 15 boxes. Looked at radiological and non-rad capacity, WAC compliance, emplacement, logistics. No significant issues identified – deemed acceptable

10 Sellafield WAGR Boxes WAGR boxes are not new to LLWR - LLWR currently has 35 WAGR boxes already in Vault 8. Will be transported by road because size makes unsuitable for rail due to bridges. Dry run of transporter in January to check logistics and turning circle in Vault. Some boxes are heavy so require crane to lift off and into place – exceed LLWR forklift truck capacity. Aiming for transport middle to end of May 2018

11 Sellafield PCM reclassified to LLW
8,000 PCM drums in SL stores from LLWR and SL decommissioning SL have new assay suite that allows detection down to more accurate estimate of activity 1st phase is re-assay 1,000 drums from LLWR magazine decommissioning (equivalent to HHISOs to LLWR) If LLW then will be compacted through WAMAC and consigned to LLWR for disposal Huge potential cost saving to SL from early disposal and avoids long term storage prior to GDF disposal LLWR have done assessment of process and disposability assessment against LLWR WAC Phase 2 drums (~7,000) will be looked at separately

12 New Packages TC01R - Reusable Half Height ISO Container for metals and combustible wastes Type B Novapak Containers for Harwell Nuclear Material and LLWR PCM New TC01R container designed for transport of diversion materials Includes new filter Can then be converted for final disposal on final use Novapaks continue to be manufactured – been some issues with reliability of early units. Done an investigation and corrective actions now in place Will complete the fleet of 12 units later this year Used to Harwell and LLWR shipments to Sellafield of PCM and NM Key to removing LLWR’s PCM inventory over next few years
