How can QoS sessions be enabled between 2 devices on a HN?  IP based application priority messaging architecture What level of QoS can current layer 2 HN technologies support?  Prioritized QoS How can a QoS management system remain L2 agnostic?  IP based priority messaging with generalized levels of priority How can legacy devices be integrated into a HN QoS solution?  A prioritized QoS architecture accommodates legacy devices Harmonization of J.192 (CableHome) and UPnP.  Both have much to offer and they are complimentary. Harmonizing is in the best interest of all parties involved. 1/2/2019

5 Highlights from Presentation 3 “Quality of Service for the User (parameters, models, measurement) and Interoperability Issues ” Dec 2003 TSB organized CTO meeting: key conclusion  The ITU should take responsibility for defining a globally interoperable end to end QoS solution that is simple for the user ITU QoS Workshop: key conclusions & challenges  End to end QoS is a critical requirement  Common understanding and implementation of QoS classes needed across many network types (cellular, wireless, wire-line, access)  Collaborative effort required to define unified QoS signaling system Study Group 12 is playing a coordinating role (Question O/12)  Identifying gaps in standards required to realized end to end QoS QoS model should be based on end user perception  G1010: 8 applications classes based on tolerance for loss & delay  Further development w/in SG 12 will give more specific limits for many applications (for example online games, telemedicine) 1/2/2019

The Home Gateway will play a critical QoS role in home services  Bridge between the many services being delivered to the home, and the many device types on the home network  Connects multiple access network technologies to multiple home network technologies, bridges QoS among them all The Key QoS issues include:  Bandwidth, delay, data loss and stability The Key QoS requirements include:  Broadband, guaranteed QoS, congestion proof (for critical packets), technology independent ITU is focusing on the Next Generation Network (NGN):  The HN is a critical part, the Home gateway is the enabling device  The home gateway should have an open service platform 1/2/2019

7 Overview of issues in the session
A global standard for the interoperable management of QoS on the home network is critical for consumers and is an industry enabler - Harmonization required among ITU standards, CableHome, UPnP/DHWG Today, prioritized QoS in the only practical choice for QoS on the HN - Parameterized QoS will be needed if quality guaranteed services over the home network are to become a reality (L2 has to catch up) Without End to End QoS, there is no QoS for services into the home - The HN is a critical component, must be included in the solution The Home Gateway is THE device that enables the HN to be integrated into an end to end QoS solution - Bridge between multiple access technologies and home technologies Many industry efforts actively addressing various QoS issues - Aggressive collaboration needed to provide a global cross-network solution that is uniform from a consumer perspective (SG 12 driven) Application QoS requirements do not necessarily translate to application priority Other Issues: Bandwidth requirements for video? Can wireless networks really support entertainment video? Who manages QoS policy on the HN? 1/2/2019

8 Recommendations Near term deployment focus should be on prioritised QoS for practical reasons Parameterised QoS is required - The key is is L2 and other technology developments, continue L2 and above standards efforts in this area Continued harmonization between CableHome & UPnP, resulting work to be standardized via J.192 revision Joint SG9/SG12 sponsored HN QoS Standardization Summit - Facilitate cross education between HN standards efforts and other industry forums such as UPnP and DHWG - Focus on the home gateway and integrating the home network into an end-to-end QoS solution - Both recommended at Access NW All-star Workshop 1/2/2019

9 Follow-up actions When complete, incorporate CableHome/UPnP harmonized solution into J.192 revision Communications between SG9 and SG12 chairman regarding the possibility of a HN QoS Standardization Summit (in conjunction with the upcoming ITU-T Chairman’s Meeting) 1/2/2019

10 Conclusion Services are king on the home network
Without QoS, many home networking services won’t be accepted by consumers, which will dampen the HN industry We should get started now with prioritized QoS Parameterized QoS required by service providers, we must solve the associated technical issues End-to-end QoS is key for services entering the home, and the home gateway plays a key role in integrating the HN into an end-to-end QoS solution. 1/2/2019
