Chemistry Naming Ions
2
Chemical Names and Formulas
Monatomic Atoms Consist of a single atom with a positive or negative charge resulting from the loss or gain of valence electrons
3
Cation - an atom with a positive charge
When the metals in Groups 1A, 2A, and 3A lose electrons, they form cations with positive charges equal to their group number. The name of the ion is just ___ion (or cation).
4
Anion – an atom with a negative charge
When the nonmetals in Groups 5A, 6A, and 7A gain electrons, they form anions with negative charges equal to 8 – group number. The name ends in –ide Ex: Chloride
5
Ions of Transitional Metals
The charges of transition metal ions must be determined from the number of electrons lost. We use the stock name (found on p.255). Ex: copper (I) ion is Cu+ copper (II) ion is Cu2+ **Also on p. 255, the transition metals with only one ionic charge. Silver (Ag+), Cadmium (Cd2+), Zinc (Zn2+)
6
Polyatomic Ions Ions composed of more than one atom.
Most end in –ite or –ate Lesser amount of oxygen = -ite Greater amount of oxygen = -ate **These ions are to be treated like an element – they CANNOT be broken up. ALWAYS use them in their complete state** p. 257 – copy any listed there that are not on your reference sheet
