1 The Solar System

2 Venus: Aphrodite the Goddess of love

3 Venus Profile Size 90% the size of Earth & 81% the mass of Earth.
3rd smallest in our solar system. Distance from the sun 66 million miles from the sun.

4 Tell me about it! Has a very thick atmosphere that acts as a green house holding heat. Mostly made of carbon dioxide nitrogen and sulfuric acid. It would rain acid on this planet. This planet has a hard surface, in addition to what is believed as a hard core.

5 Core The surface of Venus is a thick crust of dried up volcano lava.
About 2/3 of the surface is low, rolling mountains and the rest is high flat places and low areas. We think that Venus has an iron core just like the earth.

6 The Atmosphere Temperatures Lowest (No definite answer)
Highest (+864 degrees F) Wait a minute. Venus is closer to the sun than the Earth is, but in this case, the temperatures are much warmer, even than that of Mercury. The atmosphere on Venus is so thick, that it locks in the heat. The average temperature on Venus is 850 degrees.

7 The Orbit Every 224 Earth days, Venus orbits the Sun.
However, the planet itself rotates once every 5,832 hours. (243 days) That means a day is longer than a year on Venus. Imagine how long the school day would be on Venus. It would be light out for days straight, and dark for a days because Venus has almost no tilt. That would be one heck of a nap.

8 Can we live there? Venus is a lot like earth... It's about the same size, mass, similar surface rocks and a close distance to the Sun. But there are some major differences! There's hardly any water, the air is poisonous the clouds are full of acid, the atmosphere is so thick and heavy that you'd be crushed by the pressure Venus is too hot! Why is Venus so hot? It's because of the thick layer of clouds... When heat goes in, it stays in! We call this the greenhouse effect. There's one last unpleasant thing about Venus: wind up to 217 mph!

9 Weight on Venus On Venus, the gravity is just slightly less than on Earth. So…you would weigh less on Venus than on Earth. If you weighed 100 pounds on Earth, then you would only weigh 78 pounds on Venus.

10 Lightning There is proof that there are lightning storms on Venus.
However, it would rain sulfuric acid instead of rain. This would be one rain that you would not want to stick your tongue out for.

11 When can I see the transit of Venus next?
The next time you can see Venus cross the sun is on December  They occur in a pattern that generally repeats every 243 years, with pairs of transits eight years apart separated by long gaps of years and years.

12 Basic Facts No natural satellites. (Moons)
Spins in the opposite direction as all the other planets in our solar system. Here, the sun rises in the West, and sets in the East. Except for our moon, Venus is the brightest object in our night sky.

13 Magnetic Field Remember how we said that planets were like big magnets? Well, Venus might not be. We're pretty sure that this is because Venus rotates too slowly to become magnetic.

14 Your Assignment Background Knowledge:
Venus is named after the Greek God Aphrodite. The reason for this is because it shines brightly in the sky. Your goal is to create a new name for Venus based upon the fact that it is full of volcanoes, rains acid, and has lightning storms, and make a myth that goes along with it. The gods were making a new planet in our solar system, but the acids started to mix and blew up creating Explosionisa, (Venus). The gasses are so incredible that anyone who ventures near the planet will immediately become a part of the atmosphere ripping your body apart molecule by molecule.
