Titian painted the Assumption of the Virgin for the city's Church of Santa Maria del Frari. This work astounded viewers with its vivid color, the red of the Virgin's robes, and the golden light focused from above. Titian painted three levels of swirling figures and draperies, outstretched arms and glowing faces, which were shown as if the viewer were looking up at the scene from below. Taken together, these components suggested a religious awe unprecedented in painting ("Titian", 1999). It is a huge painting, with an amazing arrange­ment. Titian painted bright golden light streaming down from the heavens and gave the most important figures brilliant red robes to make them stand out. (Renaissance, 14-15). In the Assumption of the Virgin, Mary floats upward to God who waits to receive her in heaven. The red of her garment helps create a sense of passion in the scene and at the same time leads the viewer's eye to the cloak of God above and to similar spots of red below in the group of apostles who watch her ascension in amazement

Titian used bold brushwork, rich color and a dynamic composition in all of his works. The technical abilities and florid style of this unorthodox artist confounded his contemporaries. Painting in oils was not very common then; Titian's impressive use of the medium brought it into favor. He would go over each canvas several times, accumulating details and building elements with color. Over the years his brush strokes became freer and looser, quite unlike the controlled, tightly spaced strokes of the traditional style. Furthermore, he employed the texture of the paint itself to create a lush effect. He was even known to use his fingers instead of a brush. Titian treated each painting with a layer of varnish, which he mixed himself, to give it a glossy finish.
