2 Canada’s Recent History
Multiculturalism = different cultures are encouraged to retain their distinct characteristics, ideas & beliefs within the larger society 1971-Canada adopted an official policy of cultural pluralism. What are the pros and cons in a society of having an official Multiculturalism Policy?

3 STEREOTYPE A simplified belief based on judging all members of a group by the behaviours of a few. A stereotype ignores individual differences and rejects the concept of judging every person for themselves

4 PREJUDICE An unfavourable belief or judgment about members of a group, without the knowledge or experience needed to make such a judgment. May lead to discriminatory action

5 DISCRIMINATION A set of actions that societies or individuals take against particular people or groups of people because of their race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, etc…

6 TYPES OF DISCRIMINATION
SYSTEMIC DISCRIMINATION-Discrimination supported by laws. Discrimination that exists embedded in the practices and rules of institutions. HARRASSMENT-Discrimination in the form of verbal or physical attacks. GENOCIDE-Widespread killing of members of a particular group.

FUNDAMENTAL FREEDOMS-SECTION 2 Everyone has the following fundamental freedoms: Freedom of conscience and religion Freedom of thought, belief, opinion and expression, including freedom of the press and other media of communication Freedom of peaceful assembly Freedom of association

9 EQUALITY RIGHTS EQUALITY BEFORE AND UNDER LAW AND EQUAL PROTECTION AND BENEFIT OF LAW-SECTION 15 Every individual is equal before and under the law and has the right to the equal protection and equal benefit of the law without discrimination and, in particular, without discrimination based on race, national or ethnic origin, colour, sex, age or mental or physical disability
