Acceleration in Mathematics The Traditional Pathway Math 7 Math 8 Algebra I Regents Exam Geometry Regents Exam Algebra 2 Regents Exam College Precalculus Grade 7 Grade 8 Grade 9 Grade 10 Grade 11 Grade 12 The Accelerated Pathways Math 7-8A / 7-8AE Algebra IA Algebra IAE Regents Exam Geometry Regents Exam Algebra 2 Regents Exam College Precalculus AP Mathematics Grade 7 Grade 8 Grade 9 Grade 10 Grade 11 Grade 12

2 The Pathway Options Option 1 Option 2 Option 3 Grade 7 Grade 8 Grade 9
Algebra I A Single period of math each day. Students will take the Algebra I Regents in June Math 7-8A Single period of math each day; covers all of Math 7 and Math 8 in one year Geometry (9A) Accelerated Math 7-8AE Covers all Math 7 & half Math 8. Includes an additional period of math on alternate days Algebra I AE Finishes Math 8 & all of Algebra I. Includes an additional period of math on alternate days. Algebra I Regents in June. Option 2 Geometry (9A or with a lab) Extended Option 3 Math 7 Single period of math each day Math 8 Single period of math each day Algebra 1 Traditional

3 Which Option is Right for My Child?
For a student to feel confident in a math class, both the pace and the level of the content must be a good fit for the child*. Option 1 Option 2 Option 3 Accelerated Extended Traditional This option compacts three years into two; students have only one period of math every day. This option compacts three years into two; students have an additional period of math every other day. This non-accelerated pathway follows the regular middle school sequence of Math 7 and Math 8. This student demonstrates mastery of the current 6th grade level course standards. This student is able to grasp concepts at a rigorous pace. This student demonstrates proficiency of the current 6th grade level course standards. This student is able to grasp concepts at a slightly faster pace. The accelerated pace may not be a good fit for this student. The focus is on developing solid grade-level math skills in preparation for high school math. Students take the Algebra 1 Regents in Grade 8 Students take the Algebra 1 Regents in Grade 8 * Decisions about which option is best should be a joint decision based on the partnership between the school and the family.

4 Accelerated Course Differences 7-8 A  Algebra I A & 7-8 AE  Algebra I AE
Single period of math in both 7th and 8th grade 7-8 A covers all of math 7 and 8 Algebra I A covers all of Algebra 1 and ends in a June Regents Exam 7-8 AE  Algebra I AE: Double period math on alternate days 7-8 AE covers all of 7th grade and HALF of 8th grade Algebra I AE finishes math 8 and all of Algebra 1 ending in a June Regents Exam * The extended program necessitates giving up an art or music class. This allows for more math seat time and a Regents opportunity.

5 (For example, Calculus, AP Calculus, AP Statistics)
Acceleration will provide students the opportunity to take higher-level mathematics in high school (For example, Calculus, AP Calculus, AP Statistics) Acceleration with a single period of math (Option 1) in grade 7 and grade 8 will cover three years of material in two years, but topics will be condensed in the first year (grade 7). Instruction will be at a rigorous pace. Acceleration with the additional period of math on alternate days (Option 2) in grade 7 and grade 8 will also cover three years of material in two years. Topics will not be condensed, so every period will be an instructional period. Math support classes will still be available for those who qualify.
