1 Free Fall Motion

2 Free Fall Motion A free falling object is an object that is falling under the sole influence of gravity. Any object that is being acted upon only by gravity is said to be in free fall. Free fall objects undergo air resistance. Free fall objects accelerate downward at a rate of m/s2, which is the acceleration due to gravity.

3 Free Fall Motion Position vs. Time graph for an object in free fall
Velocity vs. Time graph for an object in free fall Why this shape of a curve???

4 Watch the video and Graph the astronauts distance over time.
Why this shape of a curve??? Fast forward to only the dot falling. Follow his motion to see the same PT graph

5 PT Graph of Falling Why does this graph have a Negative slope
Starts from a high position And falls to ground (0) Is this PT graph decelerating No. starts slow (gradual slope) ends fast (steep slope) Does the shape of this graph indicate constant v or changing v=a acceleration due to gravity (it’s a curve on PT)

6 Do heavier objects fall faster?
NO! Gravity affects all things the same. Gravity never changes (given the same distance from the center of the earth) If this were true then gravity would pull down heavy buildings light things that are dropped would never fall

7 Question Why would a bag of rocks and a bag of feathers fall at the same speed? How fast something falls is due to gravity. Any falling object will fall at the speed of gravity which is 9.8 m/s2. Most people get this confused with is the force of gravity, which involves the mass of the object. Take notes over the following video

8 Free Fall Motion Which one would hit the ground first?

9 Free Fall Formulas d = Vi t+ ½at2 Vf = Vi + at Vf2 = Vi2 + 2ad
d = Vi + Vf x t Which formula finds velocity when given acceleration and time? Which formula finds distance given v, a, t How is this formula different from the other distance formula?
