1 LAB 7: The Role of the Kidney in Extracellular Fluid Homeostasis
#Bernard April F, Grace P, Tommy P, Bill K

2 Questions 1.Present the creatinine clearance for your four test subjects and describe the trends. 2.What changes in GFR would you predict to occur in response to the hypotonic, isotonic and alkalytic drinks (and explain these mechanisms accounting for the changes in GFR)? 3. Are the data consistent with those predictions?

3 Creatinine Clearance Results:
Question1. Present the creatinine clearance for your four test subjects and describe the trends. Creatinine Clearance Results: Hypotonic and isotonic drink subject: creatinine clearance rate increased. Alkalotic drink subject: creatinine clearance rate decreased (dramatically).

5 Question 2. What changes in GFR would you predict to occur in response to the hypotonic, isotonic and alkalotic drinks? (mechanisms) Glomerular Filtration Rate: relates to the flow rate of filtered liquid through the kidney Predictions on GFR change: Hypotonic drink: Subject would be well hydrated and we would expect GFR to increase Isotonic drink: We expect GFR to increase Alkalotic drink: Primary metabolic alkalosis is characterized by an elevation in the pH, caused by an increase in the plasma HCO3- concentration. This causes a decrease in GFR and an increase in HCO3- reabsorbtion

6 Expected Results

7 #3. Are the data consistent with those predictions?
