Ultrasound-guided Ischial Bursa Injection: Technique and Positioning Considerations  Steve J. Wisniewski, MD, Mark Hurdle, MD, Jason M. Erickson, DO, MSPT, Jonathan T. Finnoff, DO, Jay Smith, MD  PM&R  Volume 6, Issue 1, Pages (January 2014) DOI: /j.pmrj Copyright © 2014 American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Terms and Conditions

2 Figure 1 Ultrasound image, demonstrating a short-axis view of the hamstring tendon origin, ischium (ISCH), and sciatic nerve (SCN). The ischial bursa would be found in the potential space just superficial to the hamstring tendon origin. The sciatic nerve is encircled, and there are hypertrophic changes on the medial aspect of the ischial tuberosity. The top is superficial; the bottom is deep; the left is medial (MED); and the right is lateral. The asterisk indicates the hamstring tendon origin. 3 Figure 2 Ultrasound image, demonstrating a needle within the ischial bursa. The gluteus maximus muscle is above the needle tip, and the hamstring tendon origin is below the needle tip. The arrow indicates the needle tip; The top is superficial; the bottom is deep; the left is medial (MED); and the right is lateral. ISCH = ischium; SCN = sciatic nerve. 4 Figure 3 Example of ultrasound imaging used in the second part of this study. The ultrasound probe is placed over the right ischial tuberosity, while also visualizing the sciatic nerve. The subject is side lying, with the right hip flexed to approximately 90°.
