3 Fond memories fill our minds when we rehearse those infamous “family vacations.” … The ole’ family station wagon was a must…

4 “the act of giving rest or a state of settled or final rest”
katapausis (katapausis) “the act of giving rest or a state of settled or final rest”

5 to better understand the rest of God
Purpose: to better understand the rest of God

6 I WHAT is This Rest? A. It is Not the “Canaan Rest”

7 Deuteronomy 3:20 “Until the Lord gives rest to your fellow countrymen as to you, and they also possess the land which the Lord your God will give them beyond the Jordan…”

8 Joshua 1:13-15 “Remember the word which Moses the servant of the Lord commanded you, saying, ‘The Lord your God gives you rest, and will give you this land.’ … Until the Lord gives your brothers rest, as He gives you, and they also possess the land which the Lord your God is giving them. Then you shall return to your own land, and possess that which Moses the servant of the Lord gave you beyond the Jordan toward the sunrise.”

9 I WHAT is This Rest? A. It is Not the “Canaan Rest”
B. It is Not the “Sabbath Rest”

10 Exodus 16:23 “… This is what the Lord meant: Tomorrow is a sabbath observance, a holy sabbath to the Lord. Bake what you will bake and boil what you will boil, and all that is left over put aside to be kept until morning.”

11 Deuteronomy 5:12-15 “Observe the sabbath day to keep it holy, as the Lord your God commanded you. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a sabbath of the Lord your God… And you shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the Lord your God brought you out of there by a mighty hand and by an outstretched arm; therefore, the Lord your God commanded you to observe the sabbath day.”

12 I WHAT is This Rest? A. It is Not the “Canaan Rest”
B. It is Not the “Sabbath Rest” C. It is “God’s Rest”

13 Revelation 14:13 “And I heard a voice from heaven, saying, ‘Write, blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on!’ ‘Yes,’ says the Spirit, ‘that they may rest from their labors, for their deeds follow with them’”

14 II How Does One ENTER /REMAIN in This Rest?
A. It Begins With God’s Word

15 Both Israel and we today have had “the gospel” (good news) preached unto us (4:2)…

16 II How Does One ENTER /REMAIN in This Rest?
A. It Begins With God’s Word B. It Results in Faith, Repentance and Confession C. It Involves Fear and Diligence

17 “to have awesome reverence or fear”
fobew (fobeo) “to have awesome reverence or fear”

18 Matthew 10:28 “And do not fear those who kill the body, but are unable to kill the soul; but rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.”

19 Philippians 2:12 “So then, my beloved, just as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your salvation with fear and trembling.”

20 2 Peter 1:5,10 “Now for this very reason also, applying all diligence, in your faith… Therefore, brethren, be all the more diligent to make certain about His calling and choosing you; for as long as you practice these things, you will never stumble.”

21 It was a stormy night when an elderly couple entered the lobby of a small hotel. They asked for a room, but the clerk said they were full…

22 His host took him to the corner of 5th Avenue and 34th Street
His host took him to the corner of 5th Avenue and 34th Street. There stood a beautiful new building…

23 George C. Bodlt became the first manager of the Waldorf-Astoria and later became owner of several more well known hotels…

24 On the slip of paper were two words – “Semper Fidelis” the Latin motto of the Marines which means: “always faithful”

25 Summary and Conclusion:
My point and the point of this text is this. We have seen how through unfaithfulness/disobedience the nation of Israel failed to enter their rest – the Promised Land. What happened to Israel in the wilderness is treated as an “example” or “type” of what can happen to Christians…
