Similes A comparison of two or more things using the words “like” or “as.” Example: The sun is like a yellow ball of fire in the sky. Can you come up with any examples of your own?

Metaphors A comparison of two or more things without using the words “like” or “as.” Example: Her hair was pure silk. Can you come up with any examples of your own?

Hyperbole A BIG exaggeration, usually with humor.
Example: The creamery had mile high ice cream cones! Can you come up with any examples of your own?

Assonance A resemblance of sounds in words or symbols.
Example: holy and stony Fleet feet sweep by sleeping geese.

Onomatopoeia Naming a thing or an action by a sound associated with it
Example: Buzzzz! Hiss. Roar. Wuff! Can you come up with your own examples?

Personification Giving non humans (animals, places, objects) humanlike traits. The teddy bear smiled as the little girl hugged him close. Can you come up with your own examples?

Alliteration A number of words in the same sentence or phrase share the same first consonant sound. Example: The wild and woolly walrus waits and wonders when we’ll walk by. Can you come up with your own examples?
