pVHL targets HIFα for proteasomal degradation. Accordingly, tumors with wild-type pVHL have low levels of HIFα. pVHL-defective tumors can be subdivided based on whether they accumulate both HIF1α and HIF2α (H1H2) or HIF2α alone (H2).
