Standards for Mathematical Practice
Urban Math Institute Amanda Imo Susan Polson and I actually did a PD for our school. We had a powerpoint together but split it up for the purpose of this UMI assignment.
2
Engage- The Game Twenty
We were taught to always start a lesson by engaging the students by letting them explore. Let's try this today! First, model how to play the game with a participant. Describe that the object of the game is not say the number twenty. You begin with either 1,2, or 3. Then the next person can add either 1,2, or 3 to that number. You want to be the person NOT to get the number twenty. After modeling, have the participants try on their own.
3
Questioning Strategies
Ask questions to lead them to finding patterns and making sense of the numbers. What number didn't you want to get? Why? Talk and share your ideas. Play again and see how your strategy has changed. Discuss. After a few minutes of trying the game, discuss these questions.

Standards for Mathematical Practice
1. Model with mathematics. 2. Use appropriate tools strategically. 3. Attend to precision. 4. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning. 5. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. 6. Reason abstractly and quantitatively. 7. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. 8. Look for and make use of structure. There are eight standards to follow for purposeful teaching. These are the eight that are taken from Common Core. I will discuss four of them. (Susan did the other four).
5
Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them
Cookie share story What is the problem in the story? How can we solve the problem? How can we use manipulatives to help us make sense of the problem? Describe the story that was read during our PD over the summer. Talk through each of these points and then show picture on next slide for a concrete example.
7
Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others
Each group wrote out their thinking along with pictures. Walked around to see other group’s posters. Shared the various strategies and reasoning.
10
Reason abstractly and quantitatively
Decontextualize and Contextualize We took a story problem (an abstract idea) and physically used manipulatives to show how to solve the problem. Go back over the cookie story problem as an example.
11
Look for and make use of structure
Open Sentence Game Tell whether each statement is true or false. What do you notice when you are debating if a statement is true or false? Have the participants inquire that the properties can be derived from the sentences. Explain that through this game you were making use of the structure of mathematics.

Then have each participant choose two that stood out to them and that they can use this year and have them describe how they will use it.. Have them write the standards with a description on an index card. Walk around and see what they are writing to see if they understood what the standards were about and how they can use them in their room.

Thank you Please take your index card and place it on your desk to remind you to actually DO IT! Thank you for your attendance and participation.
