The author assignments are below: Doris Lessing (page 909) Nadine Grodimer (page 923) Chinua Achebe (page 929) Ben Okri (page 875) V.S. Naipaul (page 1015) Wole Soyinka (937) STEPS: Read the background information on each and, on the poster, write down the following: -key facts about his/her life. -What kinds of issues did they address in their writing? -What is the context in which they wrote? -How is their writing related to colonialism? What is an overarching theme throughout their work? -What is the background in the selection included in the textbook? What does the work deal with?

Both parents British Lived most of her life on a British colony Farm that employed black African laborers who earned $1.50 a month Wrote about the racial problems resulting from colonialism.

5 Story Background Rhodeisa (now Zimbabwae)
British named it this after a British man names Cecil Rhodes (businessman) British arrived in late 1800s Seized country’s most fertile farmland. Africans displaced from ancestral homelands to communal lands where soil war poor and raising crops difficult. Displaced African farmers forced into cheap labor. Worked in cities and mines while minority enjoyed a high living standard and blacks barely scraped by. Story written in 1964. S. Rhodesia fought for independence; Britain refused. Gained independence in 1965. Civil war tore apart country. After years of fighting between black nationalists and government troops, country emerged as republic of Zimbabwae in 1980.

Doesn’t romanticize Story Background Lagos – Biggest city in Nigeria (new) Small rural village – (old) Clash between old (African) and new (Western) ways Post-colonial Christianity accepted by Ibo Colonized by British Struggle between African values and Western ones

8 Discussion How do westerners view marriage today?
Can you think of other times, places, and cultures that held differing view of marriage? How were they different?

9 Extended Ending Write an extended ending to this story. What are the effects that occur in the Ibo tribe as a result of Okeke accepting his grandchildren into the tribe?
