3 Standards SC.912.L.18.9 Explain the interrelated nature of photosynthesis and cellular respiration. SC.912.L.18.In.4 Recognize that plants give off oxygen that is used by animals and animals give off carbon dioxide that is used by plants. SC.912.L.18.Su.4 Recognize that people and animals breathe in the oxygen that plants give off. SC.912.L.18.Pa.2 Recognize that plants need water, light, and air to grow. SC.912.L.18.7 Identify the reactants, products, and basic functions of photosynthesis. SC.912.L.18.In.2 Identify the products and function of photosynthesis. SC.912.L.18.Su.2 Recognize that the function of photosynthesis is to produce food for plants.

4 Essential Questions/Big Ideas
What is photosynthesis? Where does photosynthesis occur? What are chloroplasts and where are they found? Understand that animals give off carbon monoxide, which the plant needs, and plants give off oxygen, which animals need. Essential Questions/Big Ideas

5 What is Photosynthesis?

6 What is photosynthesis?
process by which plants make their own food  “photo” means light “synthesis” means put together What is photosynthesis?

7 Importance of Photosynthesis
Photosynthesis is so essential to life on earth that most living organisms, including humans, cannot survive without it All of our energy for growth, development and physical activity comes from eating food from plants and animals. Animals obtain energy from eating plants. Plants obtain energy from glucose made during photosynthesis. Importance of Photosynthesis

8 What plants need to create the process of photosynthesis.
Plants need three basic things to live: water, sunlight, and carbon dioxide. Plants use the sunlight to get energy. They get water from rain. They get carbon dioxide from people breathing.  What plants need to create the process of photosynthesis.

9 What is needed for Photosynthesis?
To make food, plants need all of the following: carbon dioxide water sunlight What is needed for Photosynthesis?

10 By taking in water through the roots, carbon dioxide from the air, and light energy from the Sun, plants can perform photosynthesis to make glucose (sugars) and oxygen.

12 More on Photosynthesis…

13 What does Photosynthesis produce?
Photosynthesis is important because it provides two main things: food oxygen

15 What happens during Photosynthesis?
1 Photosynthesis takes place in the leaves of plants. The leaves are made up of cells. 2 Inside these cells are tiny structures called chloroplasts. Each chloroplast contains a green chemical called chlorophyll. This gives leaves their green color. 3 Chlorophyll absorbs the sun’s energy. 4 Oxygen is released from the leaves into the atmosphere. 5 Hydrogen and carbon dioxide are used to form glucose or food for plants.
