Facts: Sailors on Christopher Columbus’ ships slept on the open deck at night.
Tied themselves down to keep from being thrown in to the sea as the ship as the ship rolled in the waves!

4. Vasco nunez de balboa Country: Spain
Obstacles: Fought with the Native Americans
Propose: Looking for wealth and fame
Achievements: The first European to discover the Pacific Ocean
Facts: Once settled in South America, Balboa married the daughter of the local Native Americans Chief

5. Jacques Cartier Country: France Obstacles: Sailors caught diseases
Purpose: Find a water route to Asia
Achievements: Found St. Lawrence river and Gulf of St. Lawrence
Facts: He named the area “kanata” the Ioqiros word for ”village”

6. Henry Hudson Country: Holland
Obstacles: Crew mutinied in the cold climate
Purpose: to find the Northwest/Northeast passage
Achievements: Found Hudson river.
Facts: Hudson’s crew kicked him of the boat

7. John cabot Country: England Obstacles: No maps
Purpose: Wanted to reach Asia. Thought he could do so by sailing west.
Achievements: Found Newfoundland
Facts: One of his three sons, Sebastian also went on the trip.

8. De Soto Country: Spain Obstacles: Diseases Purpose: Start a colony
Achievements: Refocus Spain on colonization and the Pacific

9. De Leon Country: Spain Obstacles: Fought with Natives
Purpose: Find gold and legendary “fountain of youth”
Achievements: Discovered Florida and claimed it for Spain
Facts: Named Florida after the Spanish word flower.
