1 Hell and Eternal Punishment

2 Punishment of Eternal Fire
“Even as Sodom and Gomorrah. . . Are set forth as an example, suffering the punishment of eternal fire” (Jude 7) “turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah into ashes. . .” (2 Peter 2:6) Hailey: “If they serve as an example, what do they teach except that those who suffer the punishment of eternal fire exist no more?” (p.142)

3 ETERNAL- EVERLASTING AIONOS– “Describes duration either undefined but not endless or undefined because endless” (Romans 16:25, 16:26). Everlasting Priesthood, Everlasting hills, etc. (Exodus 40:15, Hebrews 7:12, Genesis 49:26, 2 Peter 3:10) When speaking of an action, emphasis upon eternal result, not eternal action (Jude 7)

4 ETERNAL- EVERLASTING Hailey’s examples: (p ) Chaff, Tares, Dead Branches (Matthew 3:11-12, 13:24-30, 36-43; John 15:1-10) “ Burned up with unquenchable fire” “burned with fire” “cast in fire and burned” Hailey: “there is nothing left beyond the fire of a consciousness which could possibly be tormented” (p. 144)

5 ETERNAL- EVERLASTING Eternal: It denotes longest possible duration as subject is capable of enduring Priesthood, Chaff, Tares, Dead Branches, Sodom and Gomorrah, Earth Eternal fire may be so because of God being eternal – but what about the subject being burned with unquenchable fire? How long has rich man – His spirit- been in inescapable Hadean torment (suffering punishment of fire)? (Luke 16: 24,28)

6 Any change in rich man’s disposition in Hades ? (Luke 16:27-28)
“Worm Dieth Not. . .” Any change in rich man’s disposition in Hades ? (Luke 16:27-28) Hailey: “Their word (disposition toward God of those cast into hell, Mark 9:48) does not die; i.e. it continued the same” Isaiah 66:18-24 Hailey” The reproach and reviling of men (Isaiah 51:7-8) – the disposition of the Jews (Acts 7) - did not die, even in Hell” Mark 9:48 – In Hell not what continues on earth

7 Outer Darkness Outer darkness – weeping and gnashing of teeth (Matthew 8:11-12; 22:13; 24:51; 25:30) Hailey – Like darkness before God created Light (P. 184) “ It was the darkness of nothingness. Physically it was the darkness of nonexistence.” 22 If outer darkness is nothingness – it is not non-existence- for someone is there where there is weeping and gnashing of teeth.

8 Eternal Punishment “Eternal” must be understood in the context of what is capable of enduring indefinitely. Our “spirits” are capable of enduring indefinitely – Our spirit is not material matter such as chaff, weeds or dead branches. How long has the rich man’s spirit been suffering inescapable torment of fire in Hades? “Worm dieth not” is a picture of eternal corruption, not a unchanged disposition – Did the rich man’s disposition change in the Hadean fire? It is “in Hell” where the worm dieth not – it is not an unchanged disposition here on earth. It is “in outer darkness” where the weeping and gnashing of teeth occurs, not our regrets on the way to extinction.

9 The Words of Eternal Punishment
Jesus: What did you mean by many and few stripes? The Words of Eternal Punishment Paul: What can you add to the discussion by being guided by the Holy Spirit into all truth?

10 Meaning of Many and Few Stripes
Context for Jesus’ teaching Luke 12:45-48 Pharisees (Lk. 11:37-43) Scribes – Lawyers (Lk. 11:46,52) Disciples (Lk. 12:37-44) Principle to understand: Much given, much required (Lk. 12:48) “greater condemnation” (Lk. 20:46-47) “Heavier judgment” (James 3:1) Punishment of stripes (many or few) is what a disobedient servant receives, not necessarily what a resurrected body and soul receives in Hell literally.

11 Righteous Judgment – Romans 2:8-9
God: “Wrath and Indignation” Man: “Tribulation and Anguish” No Respect of persons God’s hot judicial wrath Man feeling the weight and grief of the consequences of his sin. Man perishes or is lost (Romans 2:12)

12 Eternal Punishment “…who shall suffer punishment, even eternal destruction” (2 Thessalonians 1:9) “olethros” – ruin, death Sudden destruction (I Thessalonians 5:3) Destruction of flesh (I Corinthians 5:5) Drown in destruction and perdition (I Timothy 6:9)

13 Eternal Punishment “…vessels of wrath fitted unto destruction (perdition)” (Romans 9:22) “apoleia” (noun); “apollumi” (verb) The destination of the broad way (Matthew 7:13) Judas (John 17:12) Waste of ointment (Matthew 26:8) Marring of wine skins (Luke 5:37)

14 “Destruction” Hailey: “a ‘drowned’ man is no longer conscious, but is dead” (p.160) – I Timothy 6:9 Hailey: “a vessel destroyed in one’s wrath is no longer a vessel, but a pile of fragments” (p. 160) – Romans 9:22

15 “Destruction” Is not the rich man dead but conscious ? (Luke 16:23-25)
Hailey: “a ‘drowned’ man is no longer conscious, but is dead” (p.160) – I Timothy 6:9 Is not the rich man dead but conscious ? (Luke 16:23-25) Vine – “apollumi” “apoleia” – “The idea is not extinction but ruin, loss, not of being but of well-being” Hailey: “a vessel destroyed in one’s wrath is no longer a vessel, but a pile of fragments” (p. 160) – Romans 9:22 Vessels, skins, souls – ruin, not extinction; loss of well-being, not of being! (Luke 5:37, Matthew 7:13)

16 But your suffering will end in unconsciousness and extinction???
Eternal Punishment: unconscious extinction? Or conscious eternal separation “from the face of the Lord” Hailey: “Without showing respect of person, the judgment of the final day will bring terrible suffering to the wicked” (p. 162) But your suffering will end in unconsciousness and extinction???
