1 Surface Properties of Fluorinated and Semifluorinated Alkanes Mesfin Tsige, Department of Physics, Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, IL 62901 Surface Tension: Simulation results for bulk density and surface tension of short perfluorinated alkanes (C6F14 to C10F22) as a function of temperature using two different forcefields are shown below. Liquid-Liquid Interfaces: The figure below shows liquid-liquid interfacial behavior of Semifluorinated (SFA) alkane diblock copolymer with water(left) and with alkane (right). In contrast to the sharp interfaces between SFA and water, SFAs are found to be miscible with alkanes and perfluorinated alkanes. The computed liquid densities and surface tension from both models are in excellent agreement with experiment Our next goal will be to extend the investigation to long fluorinated and Semifluorinated alkanes.
