1 ALPHA Status & Plans Trapping of antihydrogen in 2010 completed five-year physics plan for “ALPHA 1” Continue study and optimisation of trapping in 2011 First microwave spectroscopy of antihydrogen (positron spin resonance) in 2011 Have begun design and procurement of a completely new device for 2012 (May) run Modular device for easier future modifications Access for lasers, improved access for microwaves Magnets from BNL as before, ability to manipulate trapped antihydrogen Improved field uniformity for precision spectroscopy Upgraded positron source Seeking hardware funding from FNU and EU

2 Impact of Proposed Funding Cut
Current budget covers 1 postdoc, travel, and drift (260K) With 17% cut for 2012, can not employ postdoc (Paul Bowe contract finishes 9/2011) Redistribute funds to increase drift budget to support ALPHA 2 hardware development Seems stupid to accept a cut without a fight after our best year ever…
