2 Introduction We look at an RFP and conclude with a design document when no RFP exists A design document describes your customer’s requirements and explains how you design meets those requirements It also contains plans for implementing the network, measuring the success of the implementation and evolving the network design as new application requirements arise

3 Responding to a Customer’s RFP
Contains: Business goals Scope of project Information on existing network Information on new applications Technical requirements Training and Support Schedules Environmental/architectural constraints Legal terms and conditions

Executive Summary Project Goal - business oriented Project Scope - information on project Design Requirements Business goals Technical Goals (Scalability, availability, performance, security, manageability, usability, adaptability, affordability)

5 Network Design Document (Cont’d)
User communities and data stores Network Applications Current State of the Network Logical Design Physical Design Results of network testing

6 Summary If you have an RFP follow format prescribed
Otherwise use a design document Following a systematic design process you can keep pace with the evolving networking industry
