1 States/Phases of Matter
Chapter 3

2 MATTER Matter consists of atoms and molecules that are too small to see without a very powerful microscope. They are always in motion and bumping into each other

3 STATES OF MATTER State is determined by how fast the particles move and how strongly they are attracted to each other

4 Solids Solids have a definite shape and volume

5 Liquids Liquids have a definite volume but not a definite shape. They take the shape of their container.

6 Gases Gas has no definite size or shape
They take shape of the container they are stored in.

7 Plasma Plasma is the state of matter that does not have a definite shape or volume and whose particles have broken apart.

8 Plasmas Examples of artificial plasmas Examples of natural plasmas
Lightning Aurora borealis Fire The sun Examples of artificial plasmas Plasma balls Fluorescent lights These are created by passing electric charges through gases.

9 TYPES OF SOLID Crystalline solid:
particles are arranged in a repeating pattern of rows. Ex.: diamond, ice, iron

10 TYPES OF SOLID Amorphous solid:
Particles are not in any particular order Examples include: oobleck, rubber, wax, glass

11 PROPERTIES OF LIQUIDS (cont.)
Viscosity: a liquid’s resistance to flow. Usually, the stronger the attractions between the molecules of a liquid, the more viscous the liquid is.

12 Properties of Liquids Examples of Liquids that have a high viscosity:
Examples of Liquids that have a low viscosity:
