1 Lesson 14 Key Concepts and Notes

2 1. Visible objects that are not light sources reflect light, but only those with very smooth surfaces act as mirrors.

3 2. The image produced by a plane mirror is upright.

4 3. The image produced by a plane mirror is reversed front to back (not reversed left to right).

5 4. The distance between an object and the reflective surface of a mirror is the same as the distance between the apparent position of the image in the mirror and the reflective surface of the mirror.

6 Lesson 14 Notes

7 1. All visible objects that are not light sources reflect light.

8 2. Nature of reflection is dependent on both color of the object and the texture of its surface
Specular reflection: smooth surface (surface of a mirror); all rays hit the surface parallel to each other and remain parallel after reflection; angles of incidence and reflection are the same Diffuse Reflection: rough surface (surface of a screen); angles of incidence and reflection are all different Law of Reflection: The angle of incident (incoming ray) is equal to the angle of reflection (reflected ray)

9 3. Images in a plane mirror are reversed front to back.

10 4. Images form behind a mirror. a
4. Images form behind a mirror. a. Image: a picture of an object formed by a mirror or lens

11 5. Virtual image: image in a mirror a
5. Virtual image: image in a mirror a. An image that can be seen but cannot be projected onto a screen

12 6. Real image: one produced by pinhole or real camera a
6. Real image: one produced by pinhole or real camera a. An image produced when light from an object is focused onto a surface
