1 Demographic Transition Review
Thursday, September 13th, 2018

2 Demographic Transition
Model of how economic development alters population dynamics. 1. Preindustrial 2. Early Transitional 3. Late Transitional 4. Industrial

3 Pre-Industrial Birth and death rates fluctuated – but birth rates tend to match death rates so the population grows slowly. People hunted for food and there were food shortages, malnutrition Lack of sanitation and medicine keep death rates high. Small population: few elderly, more younger people.

4 Early Transitional Birth rates remain high initially and Death rates drop dramatically. Population increases very quickly. Hygiene, nutrition, improve. Fewer children died when they were born. Agriculture – more children born to help with farms. New advancements including housing, guns, and cars. Education improves.

5

6 Late Transitional Birth rates begin to fall (birth control, urbanization, women’s empowerment, fewer farms so less children needed). Population may have increased from 2x to 4x by this point.

7 Industrial Transition is complete. Both death and birth rates are low.
Population is in equilibrium or even decreasing.
