2. Embarking on Level 3 – why consider level 4?
This may seem like a long way off but it really isn’t far away…. Choices at level 3 have a direct impact on opportunities at level 4…
Not just university – exciting time to progress – many level 4 options
Higher National Diploma
HE Certificate
Foundation Degree
Higher Apprenticeship

3. Progression to FE is a stepping stone, especially for schools that don’t have 6th forms.
Many of the principles apply to the HE application process, apprenticeship application process or even to some extent job application process.
This is an excellent time to prepare for the future
Progressing to College is the first step to being an independent learner so encourage them not to rely on others to:
Make decisions
Make sure their application gets in on time
Make sure that they have accept their place
But of course this is a big step so the more that you can support and encourage the better! They should be doing the doing.

When are the application deadlines?
How does it reflect on them if they miss a deadline? What lessons does it teach?

What Courses?
Courses:
It is normal to not know what you want to do.
Think about: areas of strength, enjoyment/interest and job prospects.
- Do they have a career in mind? Research and work backwards – what qualifications, experiences, skills are required
- Consider career profiles of people doing that job – how did they get there?
- Take into account how they learn and how they enjoy working.
Don’t assume what subjects are needed today now!
Work experience: This can cement your ideas of what career you would like but can also change your mind. Plus contacts you make now can be turned into job opportunities later on.
- Look at alternatives. If you study that particular subject/ degree but then change your mind – where else can it lead?
What similar careers are there available in that field? There might be their ideal career out there - they just might not be aware of it.
