Buddhism Origin Story Siddhartha Gautama Bodhisattva Born a Prince he was sheltered his entire life Never witnessed any pain or suffering growing up Took 4 journeys outside the palace 1st journey he witnessed old age 2nd journey he witnessed disease and sickness 3rd journey he witnessed death 4th journey he witnessed a holy man meditating Could not believe the world was filled with such suffering Left family and palace to find the ‘truth’ to life Meditated and fasted for 6 years to the brink of death Realized that no extreme was correct Neither Indulgence nor Deprivation was good Achieved enlightenment by understanding the way to achieve nirvana was through ‘the middle path’

The ultimate state of freedom from suffering and all worldly concerns Like: hate, greed, acceptance Enlightenment By understand the truth of life one can break the endless cycle of rebirth, disease, old age and death Middle Path “Desire leads to suffering” To free yourself from suffering you must free yourself of desire Therefore live your life in moderation and avoid both suffering and giving into desire
