1 UNIT 2 Chapter 25 Types of Nuclear Radiation
ABClark-Grubb

2 Alpha Radiation Alpha Particle: A Helium nuclei Symbol: or α
Recall the top number (4) is mass number and the bottom number (2) is atomic number Ex:The radioisotope uranium–238 releases alpha radiation and is transformed into another radioisotope, thorium–234. The sum of the top numbers on the left have to equal the sum of the top numbers on the right. The sum of the bottom numbers on the left have to equal the sum of the bottom numbers on the right.

3 Beta Radiation Beta Particle: An electron Symbol: or β
Example: Carbon-14 emits a beta particle as it undergoes radioactive decay to form nitrogen-14.  +

4 Gamma Radiation γ Gamma Particle: A high energy photon Symbol: γ
Nuclei often emit gamma rays along with alpha or beta particles during radioactive decay. Example: Thorium–230 releases an alpha particle and gamma radiation and is transformed into radium-226 γ
