1 Assessing woody carbon stocks in Miombo woodlands of Mozambique (see map for location). We used multiscale sampling of vegetation cover (leaf area index) and biomass (from stem measurements) along a 5 km transect (see schematic below). Geoferenced sampling allows comparison to optical data from IKONOS and SPOT, and radar backscatter data from ALOS (see left). Following calibration, earth observation data can then scale field measurements to the landscape, with an uncertainty assessment.
