The branches of the tree are labelled based on the key variables that discriminated among the classifications and these are listed as AGE, OA SEVERITY, OA PATTERN and KNEE MOTION. The terminal nodes of each branch (nodes nine through 19) indicate the final distributions of ratings of Appropriate (Approp), May be appropriate (May be) and Rarely Appropriate (Rarely). Vignette sample sizes are reported in each box. One Comp = mainly one knee compartment with radiographically confirmed knee OA, >one Comp = more than one compartment with radiographically confirmed knee OA, Mild/Mod = mild to moderate radiographic knee OA, Severe = severe radiographic knee OA. Normal knee motion = Full flexion and extension, <Normal knee motion = >5° of extension loss or <110° of flexion.
