Coastal Landforms caused by erosion
Coastal Landforms are either ‘depositional’ landforms or ‘erosional’ ones. We will look at ‘erosional’ ones first We will cover: Bays and headlands Wave cut platforms Caves, arches and stacks
7
Headlands Picture the scene…. You are 6 yo and making sandcastles on a small beach…. You get a bit bored and decide to go for a walk … should you go to the cliffs on the left or the cliffs on the right? and bays.
8
Waves attack the coastline.

The softer rock is eroded by the sea- forming a bay.
This area is now more sheltered, this encourages deposition and beaches are formed. Harder rock Harder rock The softer rock is eroded by the sea- forming a bay. Softer rock The more resistant rock is left sticking out into the sea called a headland. Harder rock
10
The shallower waters in the bay continue to encourage deposition.
Surrounded by deep water and exposed to the full force of the waves- the headlands are eroded. Harder rock Harder rock The shallower waters in the bay continue to encourage deposition. Softer rock Harder rock

Work to help you learn Bays and Headlands
Look at Wider World page 238 ….. A typical exam question might read “With the aid of a diagram explain how bays and headlands are made (4 marks) A* grade Challenge: Include detail, linkages, key words and an example Also notice how the text book version is simpler than the diagrams I have shown you. I also mentioned how “shallower waters can lead to more deposition because the waves will have less energy” and how the headlands are more open to the wind and therefore erosion …..
