To identify methods of utilizing the Start menu and desktop. To define common app features. To demonstrate multitasking and common in-app tasks. To understand the uses of Microsoft® Help.

5 Desktop Is the first screen a user will see after logging in to a computer Serves as a workspace and can be thought of as an electronic version of the top of your desk Can be used to perform tasks such as: placing items on the desktop moving objects around on the desktop removing items on the desktop Can store icons for programs, apps and files

6 Desktop Layout

7 Start Button Is located at the bottom, left hand corner of the desktop
When clicked, opens the start menu

8 Start Menu Can be used to open the programs on the computer
Contains the power options which can be used to shut down, restart or put the computer to sleep

9 Taskbar Is the long horizontal bar typically located at the bottom of the desktop Holds currently open apps or programs Can be customized by pinning apps to it for easy access

10 Apps Are also known as programs
Are software which are installed on the computer or device Include programs such as the Microsoft® Office Suite

11 Microsoft® Office Suite
Includes a variety of apps such as: Microsoft® Word word processing program used to create documents Microsoft® PowerPoint® presentation software used to create and deliver presentations Microsoft® Excel spreadsheet program used to organize data, complete calculations, graph data and develop reports

Includes a variety of apps such as: Microsoft® Access database management system used to create and manage databases Microsoft® Publisher desktop publishing software used to develop publications Microsoft® Outlook communication and scheduling software which allows users to manage , calendars and contacts

18 Common App Features Ribbon
is the major organizational unit of Microsoft® programs provides access to the tasks users perform while creating a file in the program consists of tabs, groups and commands

19 Common App Features Gallery
is a set of choices, often graphical, arranged in a grid or list Live Preview is a feature which allows users to point to a gallery choice and see its effect applied in the file– without actually having selected the choice. Live preview only works when using a mouse.

20 Common App Features ScreenTip
is an on-screen note which provides the name of the command, available keyboard shortcut and a description of the command can be displayed by pointing at a command on the Ribbon

21 Common App Features Dialog Box Launcher
is a small arrow which appears in the lower-right corner of some groups on the Ribbon when clicked, displays a dialog box or task pane which contains more options than those available in the group

appears to the right of the tabs on the Ribbon is a type of search box which can help to perform specific tasks in Office programs

appears automatically based on the tasks being performed contains commands related to changing the appearance of text disappears from the screen if not used

provides convenient access to frequently used commands can be customized to include commands users would like

can be located by clicking on the File tab and in Backstage view clicking Options this will open the app options window where users can make changes to the options

can be used to display information about all topics associated with an app uses a window with browser-style navigation buttons is specific to each Microsoft® program
