1 Morning Worship Liberation
Saints Philip and James Easter Season 30th April 2015 Bishop Justus Church of England School

2 Gather The Lord be with you And also with you
Philip and James appear in the list of the twelve apostles in the first three gospels. Philip was the third of the apostles to be called by Jesus (in John’s Gospel) and then brought his friend Nathanael to the Lord. James is said to be the son of Alphæus and is often known as 'James the Less' to distinguish him from the other James. Information from ‘Exciting Holiness’: Both are frequently confused with other early saints who share their names. In John's gospel, Philip has a more prominent rôle, being the third of the apostles to be called by Jesus and then himself bringing his friend Nathanael to the Lord. Philip is the spokesman for the other apostles who are questioning the capacity for feeding the five thousand and, at the Last Supper, enters into a sort of dialogue with Jesus which leads to the Farewell Discourses of our Lord. James is said to be the son of Alphæus and is often known as 'James the Less' to distinguish him. He may also be the 'James the Younger' who, in Mark's gospel, is a witness at the Crucifixion. They are celebrated on the same day because the church in Rome, where their relics rest, was dedicated on this day in the year 560.

3 Receive Philip said to Jesus, "Lord, show us the Father, and we will be satisfied." Jesus said to him, "Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and you still do not know me? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, 'Show us the Father'? Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own; but the Father who dwells in me does his works. Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; but if you do not, then believe me because of the works themselves. Very truly, I tell you, the one who believes in me will also do the works that I do and, in fact, will do greater works than these, because I am going to the Father. I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If in my name you ask me for anything, I will do it. " John 14: 7-14

4 Engage Philip and James who were they? A quick but quite
wordy introduction to who they were Working as a team Jesus chose a team to work with Philip and James were important members of his team Imagine you are going to change the world / play football / create the most incredible food ever... etc... Who would your fantasy team of 12 be? Play a team game something which requires all members to be involved to be successful e.g. lining up in order of age / alphabetical order but without speaking. Other Ideas The Twelve Disciples Philip and James were part of the group of people who Jesus called to be his disciples…. These are the names of the twelve disciples: Simon (who Jesus liked to call Peter, which means rock), his brother Andrew; brothers James and John; Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James and Thaddaeus; Simon and Judas Iscariot, who would later betray him Play a memory game to learn the 12 disciples….. Use the following worksheet to find out more about the 12 Following Jesus Play a silly game—such as follow my leader…. Invite a volunteer to leave the room the rest of the class nominate one person to be the leader get everyone to do some simple repetitive action such as clapping hands and then invite the volunteer back. The leader will change the action and everyone must follow the volunteer has to work out who is the leader Discuss—who we follow….?

5 Almighty Father, whom truly to know is eternal life:
Respond Almighty Father, whom truly to know is eternal life: teach us to know your Son Jesus Christ as the way, the truth, and the life; that we may follow the steps of your holy apostles Philip and James, and walk steadfastly in the way that leads to your glory; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

6 Go Following God’s saints in the ways of holiness and truth
Go in peace to love and serve the Lord. In the name of Christ. Amen.
