The Resident Assessment Instrument (RAI) consists of two basic components: the MDS 3.0 and the CAA process. The MDS identifies actual or potential problem areas. CAA’s provide for further assessment of “triggered” areas by guiding staff to look for casual or confounding factors (some of which may be reversible) for certain presenting conditions/issues CAT Care Area Triggers Care Area Triggers (CAT’s) are a set of items and responses from the MDS that are indicators of particular issues and conditions that affect nursing home residents. The potential issues and conditions that need additional assessment and review and therefore form a critical link between the MDS 3.0 and care planning
