2. How to write an Introduction

3. The Opening/Hook An opening/hook should be about 2-4 sentences long.
The hook should engage your reader- get their interest!
A hook can be a (short!) personal experience/story, commentary on the general topic you’ll be writing about (e.g. rebellion), something in the news about your topic, etc.

4. Hook examples
Some people say that rebellion isn’t a part of everyday life. That people rebel to make other people mad or uncomfortable. However, this isn’t true. [Thesis]
Teenagers do things that you might not think they’d do. Skipping school, smoking, and saying hurtful things to the people closest to them. Teens think it’s a sign of independence to rebel. Whether that’s true or not, [rebellion is a normal part of growing up.]
One day there was a girl named Stacy who wanted to go to a rock concert with her friends. Her parents said she couldn’t go and Stacy couldn’t convince them to change their minds. Stacy rebelled against them and went anyway. Stacy’s story is a very common one, as [thesis].

6. Explain or Argue?
Write an essay in which you take a position on whether or not students should be required to stay in school until they are 18. Use the information presented in the passages to support your argument. 
Write an essay in which you explain why companies target young people in their advertising and marketing. Use the information presented in the passages to support your points.
Write an essay in which you take a position on whether or not naps are generally good for people. Use the information presented in the passages to support your argument. 
Write an informative essay that explains the effects of an earthquake. Use the information presented in the passages to support your points.

7. What is a thesis? Your thesis is what your essay is all about.
It tells your reader what your expository essay will explain.
It is the position you’re taking in an argumentation essay.

8. Where is a thesis?
Your thesis should be at the end of your introductory paragraph.
You can start the paragraph by introducing the topic in an interesting way (2-4 sentences), then write your thesis.
The thesis should list the topics that will be covered in each body paragraph in the order you’re addressing them.

9. How do you choose reasons?
The reasons you use to support your thesis will become the topics of your body paragraphs.
Each reason needs to meet these requirements:
Directly supports your thesis
There is plenty of evidence in the provided articles to support it
List your reasons in your introduction, but don’t explain them there
Introduce the reasons in the introduction
Explain, provide evidence, and elaborate on each reason in its body paragraph

10. Rules for Introductions
Include a hook, thesis, and reasons supporting the thesis.
Your hook should be interesting and no more than 4 sentences long.
Your thesis should come from the essay prompt.
Your reasons should directly support the thesis and be easily supported by the texts.
Do not quote textual evidence in your introduction.
Keep your introduction between 4 and 8 sentences long.
