1 A Paleosalinity Proxy from Lipid D/H Ratios
Julian P. Sachs, School of Oceanography, University of Washington, Seattle WA In order to evaluate the influence of salinity on D/H fractionation in lipids, samples of sediment, suspended particles & water were taken from the 275 km length of the Chesapeake Bay estuary where salinities ranged from ppt. Dinosterol δD values in sediment & suspended particles from the Chesapeake Bay were closely correlated with water δD values. D/H fractionation between dinosterol and water decreased (i.e., adinosterol-water decreased) as salinity increased supporting the use of dinosterol δD values as proxies for salinity in geologic samples.
