Basic Electrical Calculations

Ohm’s Law Ohm’s Law states that the voltage (V) in a circuit equals the product of the current (I) and the resistance (R): V = I x R Increasing the voltage increases the current. Keeping the same voltage and increasing the resistance decreases the current.

Ohm’s Law Practice What is the voltage if the resistance is 3 ohms and the current is 3 amps? V = I x R

Electrical Power

Electrical Power

Electrical Power Power = Current x Voltage
Ex. P = 3 amperes x 120 volts P = 360 watts

Electrical Energy The electrical bill people pay to the power company is based on the amount of energy used by the customer. The formula used to determine this figure is based on the amount of energy used in the time dictated by the energy company. The equation is Energy = Power x time.
