1 Pre-AP Biology Graphing 1

2 Bellwork What information is missing from the image?
List at least 2 ways that maps and graphs are similar.

3 Objective Construct well organized data tables
Construct, analyze, and interpret graphs

4 Constructing well organized Data Tables

5 Example of a Good Data Table-
Effect of fertilizer on plants Date Height in cm of plant Appearance of leaves 4/5/11 10 Leaves are green and there are 2 areas of light green new leaves 4/6/11 All leaves are green and there are 3 areas of light green new growth 4/7/11 11 The plant has 3 areas with light green leaves. The leaves appear to be larger 4/8/11 13 Plant is more spread out and has 5 areas of light green leaves 4/9/11 16 Plant has 5 areas of light green leaves 12/30/2018

6 Think-Pair-Share Examine the example data table. Write down key characteristics of a data table on your note-taker. Share with a partner 3. Think-pair-share teacher presents a question teacher gives wait time for student to form answer teacher instructs students to share their answer with a partner teacher calls on non-volunteers to share with the class 3

7 Data table characteristics
Title Clear labels Dates Column/row labels Units are included Easy to view Straight lines All data can be displayed 12/30/2018

8 Purpose The ability to display your data visually is extremely important in science research. Selecting and constructing the appropriate graph is the key to understanding your data well.

9 General Rules for making Graphs
Must use graph paper, using lined paper is not appropriate for drawing a graph Independent variable is placed on the x-axis Dependent variable is placed on the y-axis

10 X and Y axis

11 Guidelines for choosing a scale on the x and y axis
Scales should be easy to use; divisions in 1, 2, 5, 10 etc depending on the size of the scale Divisions must be equal increments across the whole axis, for both X and Y axes Scales must use most of the space on the graph Scales do not have to be the same on the x and y axis Scales do not always have to start at zero

12 Scales on Graphs

13 Paraphrase Write down at least two key points from rules on making graphs Summarize the key points in your own words! 6. Paraphrase student writes down one or two main ideas directly from the text or notes student now paraphrases these ideas in their own words teacher provides feedback 6

14 Line graph Show changes in the quantity of a chosen variable and emphasize the rise and fall of the values over the range Represents continuous data – numerical scale on both the y and x axis.

15 Construction of a Line graph
Plot the data as separate points with symbols Do not connect the points, rather fit a smooth curve or line that best represents the points If more than one curve on the graph, include a key to distinguish between the two curves Title must include experimental group and dependent variable

16 Characteristics of Bar Graphs
X- axis represents discontinuous groups or non-numerical data Y axis has a numerical scale

17 Example of a Bar Graph

18 1 finger- bar graph /2 fingers- line graph
Male versus Female rat growth over time Male rat weight versus Female rat weight Rain fall in southern Arizona over the past 50 years Rate of photosynthesis over a 24 hour day Rate of photosynthesis of oak trees vs. elm trees over a 24 hour day Favorite subjects in school based on a student survey

19 Think-Pair-Share Write on your notetaker the key components that should be included on a graph. Share with a partner 3. Think-pair-share teacher presents a question teacher gives wait time for student to form answer teacher instructs students to share their answer with a partner teacher calls on non-volunteers to share with the class 3

20 Key Components Title of graph must include experimental group and dependent variable X and Y axes labeled including units Use a Key if more than one line or double bars On line graph, individual data points indicated with symbol

21 Exit Ticket Take out a sheet of scratch paper and answer the following
questions: How would you quickly teach a new student the steps to proper graphing? Exit Ticket What is one question you still have about graphing? Turn in response 21
