Presentation on theme: "Cell Cell Membrane Nucleus Cytoplasm Tissue"— Presentation transcript:

1 Cell Cell Membrane Nucleus Cytoplasm Tissue
The basic unit of structure and function in living things Cell Membrane The outside cell boundary that controls which substances can enter or leave the cell Nucleus The control center of a eukaryotic cell that directs cell activities and contains information that determines cell form and function Cytoplasm The material within a cell apart from the nucleus Tissue A group of similar cells that preform the same function

2 Muscle Tissue Connective Tissue Nervous Tissue Epithelial Tissue Organ
A body tissue that contracts or shortens making body parts move Connective Tissue A body tissue that provides support for the body and connects all of its parts Nervous Tissue A body tissue that carries electrical messages back and forth between the brain and every other part of the body Epithelial Tissue A body tissue that covers the surfaces of the body inside and out Organ A structure in the body that is composed of different kinds of tissue

3 Organ System Homeostasis Stress Skeleton Vertebrae
A group of organs that work together to perform a major function in the body Homeostasis The maintenance of stable internal conditions in an organism Stress The reaction of a person’s body to potentially threatening, changing or disturbing events Skeleton The inner framework made of all the bones of the body Vertebrae The small bones that make up the backbone

4 Joint Ligament Cartilage Compact Bone Spongy Bone
A place in the body where two bones come together Ligament Strong connective tissue that holds bones together in moveable joints Cartilage A connective tissue that is more flexible than bone and that protects the ends of bones keeping them from rubbing together Compact Bone Hard dense bone tissue that is beneath the outer membrane of a bone Layer of bone tissue having many small spaces and found just inside the layer of compact bone Spongy Bone

5 Marrow Osteoporosis Involuntary Muscle Voluntary Muscle
The soft connective tissue that fills the internal space in bone Osteoporosis A condition in which the body’s bones become weak and break easily Involuntary Muscle A muscle that is not under conscious control Voluntary Muscle A muscle that is under conscious control Skeletal Muscle A muscle that is attached to the bones of a skeleton and provides the force that moves the bones

6 Tendon Striated Muscle Smooth Muscle Cardiac Muscle Epidermis
Strong connective tissue that attaches muscle to bone Striated Muscle A muscle that appears banded also called skeletal muscle Smooth Muscle Involuntary muscle found inside many organs of the body Cardiac Muscle Muscle tissue found only inside of the heart Epidermis The outer layer of the skin

7 Melanin Dermis Pore Follicle Cancer
A pigment that gives the skin its color Dermis The inner layer of the skin Pore A opening through which sweat reaches the surface of the skin Follicle Structure in the dermis of the skin from which a strand of hair grows Cancer A disease in which some body cells divide uncontrollably
