1 Reminder: ASL is a visual, manual and spatial language
“Boxes” activity Reminder: ASL is a visual, manual and spatial language

2 Goals: Learn how to use signer’s perspective
Learn how to use spatial referents horizontally as well as maintaining one of the two referents i.e. use both hands, not just your dominant one. Fingerspelling practice and vocabulary review!

3 Instructor demo Goal is to fill various boxes on your practice sheet with fingerspelled words from Core Vocab. Units 1-2 provided by instructor. Watch how instructor directs you to a certain box using spatial referencing. Note how instructor maintains spatial referent with one hand while using the other hand to direct you to a specific box. Let’s practice and see how you do! Now are you ready to do the activity with your partner?

4 Instructions Class will be divided into two equal groups of Students A and B – desks are to be moved and set in in two rows opposite each other. Take turns! Using your handout (look on opposite side), Student A begins by using spatial referencing to instruct Student B to fill in which boxes with fingerspelled words from Core Vocab. Units 1-2. Student B should continue to confirm and repeat the fingerspelled words as provided by Student A. Then Student B does the same process.

5 Instructions continued
Both Students A and B are responsible for communicating information by asking for clarification, repeating, confirming and correcting. When Student A and B are done with their worksheets, then compare the worksheets to check for accuracy. Do not use voices. Signer’s perspective can be challenging and takes some practice!
