1.3 Evaluate the success of a large scale agricultural development you have studied. (9 + 3 SPaG) Kilombera Plantations Limited (KPL) in Tanzania is a 5818 hectare farm that produces rice, beans and pulses. KPL have helped local farmers by training them and providing them with seeds to help them to improve their yields. This has improved harvests for over 4,000 families. The company have also provided work for local people and built 82 houses for families. In addition to this, they have provided a schoolroom, health care facilities, water pipes and sustainable energy, through a mini hydro-electric power station. However, disadvantages of KPL have been that many farmers took out debts to buy the new machinery and seeds. Many people were displaced when the farm was built and they now have to rent land from KPL, which is expensive. In addition to this, local farmers claim that chemical run-off from KPL land is bad for wildlife and habitats. In conclusion, KPL have brought many advantages to the local people, but there are also lots of disadvantages too. Many people may believe that their overall impact is good, but some individuals will be worse off as a result of KPL’s involvement. Can I learn from the guidance that my teacher provides when writing her own exam answers? Can I attempt my own answers to exam questions and achieve my target grade?
