A model of factors constraining the generation of escape mutations during HCV infection, and how the development of such viral variants might ultimately contribute to viral persistence. For the sake of clarity, only the response to a single CTL epitope has been included in the diagram. Containment of viral escape would clearly require CTL responses against a wide range of epitopes; conversely, in order for viral escape to occur, the accumulation of multiple escape mutants would likely be required.
