1 Key Stage 1 Science is built upon through the early learning stages of school life by making sense of the simpler aspects of life through science. Year 1 The following topics are studied: Plants; Animals including Humans; Everyday Materials and Seasonal Changes. Children make observations and comparisons. They are encouraged to ask questions about the world around them. Year 2 The following topics studied: All living things and their habitats; Plants; Animals and Uses of everyday materials. Children begin to find answers to scientific questions by recording and gathering data.

2 Lower Key Stage 2 Year 3 The focus becomes more specific and practical skills are developed in experiments. The following topics studied: Plants; Animals; Rocks; Light; Forces and magnets. Children learn how to set up simple fair test investigations. They begin to make more systematic and careful observations. Measurements are taken using standard metric units and conclusions are presented in various ways. Year 4 Animals; Living things and their habitats; Sound; States of Matter and Electricity. Children are encouraged to use more scientific vocabulary in both written and oral explanations. Children record their findings using labelled diagrams, keys, bar charts and tables with predictions and conclusions made based upon the scientific evidence that has been gathered using a standardised Investigation sheet.

3 Upper Key Stage 2 Science involves different types of scientific enquiry, where children plan, answer questions as well as recognise and control variables where necessary. Measurements become more accurate as repeated readings are taken. Scatter graphs and line graphs record data clearly, along with scientific diagrams. Year 5 The following topics are studied: Living Things and their Habitats; Earth and Space; Properties and Changes to Materials and Forces. Year 6 During investigations children begin to use results to make predictions and set up further tests. Children also learn to identify scientific evidence that has been used to support or refute ideas and arguments. All Living Things; Inheritance and Evolution; Electricity; Light and Animals including Humans.
